This custom pearl necklace development project began with a clear starting point. The client liked the chain used in our Pearl Cluster Necklace with CZ Chain, but she did not want to copy the sample exactly.
She wanted to choose her own pearl colors, mix several sizes, and decide how full the necklace should look. She also had a target price for her collection. That meant we had to look at the whole piece again — not only the chain.
This is where custom pearl necklace development becomes very practical. Two necklaces can follow the same design idea and still look completely different. They can also have completely different costs.
Starting with an Existing Chain
For this project, the client selected one of our existing chain styles. Beginning with a chain that has already been developed saves time because the basic shape and structure are clear.
But choosing the chain is only the first decision.
The same design can be made with stainless steel, brass, sterling silver, 14K gold filled, or solid 18K gold. The stones in the chain can be CZ, crystal, moissanite, or lab-grown diamonds. These changes may not alter the outline of the necklace, but they change its weight, finish, durability, production method, and cost.
Choosing the Pearls Was the Bigger Part

The client wanted more than one pearl color and size in the necklace. We laid out different combinations before attaching anything to the chain.
At this stage, we were not simply asking, “Which color looks nice?” We needed to see how the pearls worked together.
A few larger pearls create clear focal points. Smaller pearls fill the spaces and make the clusters feel softer. Too many similar sizes can make the necklace look heavy; too many colors can make it lose direction. Even moving one gold or darker pearl can change the balance of the whole piece.
Luster matters just as much as size and color. Pearls with a softer surface glow give a very different result from pearls with sharp, mirror-like luster. If different colors are used together, their luster and surface quality still need to feel consistent. Otherwise, one group may look bright while another looks flat.
Pearl color also needs to be confirmed carefully for each order. Some shades occur naturally, while others may be treated depending on the pearl type and the look the client wants. We show the actual options before production rather than using one general color name for everything.
We Adjusted the Layout on the Table

Before the necklace was finished, we tried several layouts directly on the worktable.
We compared where the larger pearls should sit, how often each color should appear, and how much of the stone chain should remain visible. We also adjusted the distance between clusters. A tighter layout feels richer and more decorative. A more open layout feels lighter and lets the chain become part of the design.
These are small changes, but they are difficult to judge from a specification sheet alone. Seeing the real pearls beside the real chain is often the quickest way to know whether the idea works.
We shared progress with the client during this stage. The purpose was not to ask her to approve every pearl one by one. It was to make sure we understood the direction before completing hours of hand assembly.
Each Pearl Was Attached by Hand

Once the layout was confirmed, the pearls were attached individually along the chain. The work is slow because every pearl needs to sit at the right angle and the connections need to look clean from the front and back.
A simpler version may use fewer pearls, smaller clusters, and more visible chain. A fuller version may require more pearls, a wider size mix, denser placement, and several hours of additional handwork. Depending on the layout, one necklace can take roughly 3 to 10 hours to assemble.
This is also why a photo alone does not tell us the final cost. We need to know how many pearls are being used, their size and quality, the cluster density, the chain material, the stone choice, and the finishing requirements.
Why Custom Pearl Necklace Development Can Range from $39 to $3,000
The range does not mean that the same necklace receives two arbitrary prices. It means that the same design structure can be developed at very different material and quality levels.
A version near the entry level might use a stainless steel chain with CZ and commercial-grade freshwater pearls in a lighter cluster layout.
A mid-range version might use sterling silver or 14K gold filled components, brighter freshwater pearls, more pearls, and denser hand assembly.
A high-value version could use solid 18K gold, lab-grown diamonds, and carefully matched Freshwater and Akoya pearls, chosen for larger size, stronger luster, and cleaner surfaces. Rarer natural colors and tighter matching can raise the pearl cost dramatically before the handwork is even counted.
The price range is therefore a development range, not a fixed quotation. We confirm the actual price only after the material, pearl grade, size mix, layout, and quantity are clear.
The Finished Necklace

The finished piece kept the chain style the client originally liked, but the necklace no longer looked like the original sample. Her pearl colors, size mix, cluster density, material choice, and target price shaped the final result.
That is what customization usually looks like in real work. A client does not always need to begin with a completely new drawing or a new mold. Sometimes the best starting point is an existing design, followed by a series of careful choices that make it suitable for her own customers and price level.
If you have a necklace reference, an existing style you would like to adapt, or simply a target price and collection direction, send us what you have. We can help you compare realistic pearl, chain, and stone options before sampling begins.
